Variations on Pasternak’s Mein Lienchen by Giorgio Cavallon
Immigrating from Italy to the United States in the 1920's, Cavallon trained as an artist at the National Academy of Art in New York working as an assistant to Arshile Gorky in the 1930's. He was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists Group in 1939 and was one of the first to seriously explore abstract art in the United States. O'Hara admired the work of Russian poets including Boris Pasternak the subject of the poem, which Cavallon illustrates with elegant simplicity using lithographic pen.
