The Nightmare of the Elephant by Henri Matisse
Continuing the theme of the Circus, Matisse portrays the white Elephant precariously balancing on a ball under dazzling circus lights. Matisse assistant during this period of cut out creation (Lydia Delectorskaya) records his explanation that the Elephant recalls his native black forest assailing him as tongues of red fire creating a powerful sense of drama using contrasting color and form.
