Matisse captures the active motion of the horse drawn carriage of Pierrot, the celebrated "sad clown" of pantomime. Dressed in white with an uncovered pale face, Pierrot portrays in modern art, the struggle and tribulation of humanity in the modern world. White faced, the pallor of death is ever present in the burial of Peirrot.
