On the Stone by Francoise Gilot
The clamshell case of the Sur La Pierre Deluxe book of poems is an impressive and aesthetically pleasing housing of the 12 loose leaf color lithographs with a gold colored hand motif on the front of the case.
The very first poem in the collection printed in English is titled "Lithograph" and brings together in one cogent moment the essence of color lithography for Francoise. "Of being at one with the stone" and likening the action of the massive ink rollers to that of a "rolling wave" but unlike the ephemeral ocean wave, the image is "captured for ever." A revealing and powerful poem describing the feelings and challenges of creation On the Stone.
