Gretchen by Kathe Kollwitz
A true friend of the working class, Kollwitz derived inspiration from the lives of ordinary men and women. A precocious artist, she did multiple drawings of day to day life and events affecting everyday people and translated these to fine art prints as she matured as an artist, the best of which is seen in this classic portfolio.
Kollwitz' sobering treatment of the plight of young women uses the character of Gretchen in Goethe's Faust to personify the a pregnant young woman atop a bridge looking down at death holding her child in her arms.
