Marc Chagall fled to the United States in response to the persecution of the avant-garde in Europe but couldn't wait to return to France after WW2 which he did in 1950. Perfect timing for his participation in the renewal of fine art printmaking in Paris. Mourlot commented that Chagall had a "long experience of the medium" of lithography and always fostered a close collaboration "between artists and artisans" creating extraordinary prints "as a result of this team spirit". Unlike some artists that create with break neck speed, Mourlot said of Chagall that "he draws in the different colors of his composition slowly and carefully, with the concentration and conscientiousness that he brings to everything he does" with unexpected results showing "a veritable fireworks of color".
